THE GILI’S
The 3 tropical islands known locally as “The Gili’s” are called Trawangan, Meno and Air. They are tucked away on the North West tip of the island of Lombok, Indonesia and are easily reachable by various fast boat services from the more popular neighbouring island of Bali.
These islands are a haven for scuba divers, snorkelers, sun worshipers and party animals. There are miles of white sandy beaches and pristine coral reefs bursting with exotic marine life for you to enjoy.
The 3 Gili’s are all very different in terms of atmosphere. Gili Trawangan, or “Gili T” as it’s more commonly known, is the party island. With 3 big parties every week and a full moon party every month, all rocking it out until the sun comes up, various live music venues open nightly and many western and local restaurants to choose from. Gili Meno is very chilled with limited nightlife and is best suited for people/couples who want to do nothing more than relax, sit on the beach and take a couple of dives and Gili Air is a happy medium of restaurants, bars and the occasional party with some great local shallow dive/snorkeling sites.
There are no motorized vehicles (with the exception of boats) allowed on any of the 3 islands. This makes for a very unique and peaceful escape from the hustle and bustle of everyday life.
Regardless of which of these stunning islands you choose, all dive centres go to the more popular dive sites such as Shark Point, Deep Turbo, Manta Point and Halik. Most dive centres have their favorites that they visit nearly every day so it’s worth asking to see their schedule before you book a package of fundives so you don’t repeat the same sites over and over. All dive centres, both PADI and SSI, on the Gili’s are very accommodating and customer friendly, if you want to visit a particular site just ask them.
